A Fully Electric E-Truck is in the Works at Mercedes-Benz

With the recent unveiling of the Mercedes-Benz Urban E-Truck in Stuttgart, it’s more likely than ever that all-electric power will make its way into heavy distribution operations. Since 2014, Daimler Trucks has showcased the benefits of all-electric trucks with its light-weight Fuso Canter E-Cell, which is still undergoing customer trials. Mercedes-Benz, however, has plans to incorporate the Urban E-Truck into its new lineup – a medium-weight truck designed to take all-electric capability to uncharted territory.

About the Urban E-Truck

Engineered for heavy distribution operations, the all-new Urban E-Truck has an admissible total weight of 26 tons. The E-Truck gets its punch of electric power from a battery pack consisting of three lithium-ion battery models, which offer a combined capacity of 212-killowatt-hours. All in all, the E-Truck possesses an all-electric driving range of about 125 miles, letting drivers go further on a single charge.

Electricity has proven itself to be a reliable fuel source, hence its growing prevalence on the automotive markets. Wolfgang Bernhard, a member of Daimler’s Board of Management and head of Daimler Trucks & Buses, stated that, “the time is right for the electric truck.” Electric driving offers a plethora of advantages, including improved air quality via reduced emissions, access to restricted urban zones, and less noisy powertrains.

The E-Truck will benefit from 100-kilowatts of charging power, thanks to European-standard Combined Charging System Type 2 connectors. Despite its immense size, the Urban E-Truck will only take about two to three hours to fully recharge. For reassurance on the road, the batteries are nestled inside the frame to prevent costly damage in the event of an accident.

What Does the Future Hold?

As of now, no release date is on the horizon for the Urban E-Truck; however, it is speculated that 2020 will be its first year in production. What’s more, Mercedes-Benz apparently has plans to expand its line of fully electric urban distribution trucks. In its press release for the Urban E-Truck, Mercedes-Benz stated that, “Series production for urban short-radius distribution is conceivable at the beginning of the next decade.”
