How Long Do Car Batteries Last?

Your car battery is built to withstand countless charge cycles and a variety of climate conditions in Boulder City. However, no battery is built to go on forever, so how long do car batteries last? The average Valley Automall driver should get anywhere from three to five years out of their battery life. Your battery might still start your car after five years but you may start experiencing some of the common problems associated with a dying battery, so we recommend at least scheduling a battery inspection to determine if a battery replacement is recommended.

Here are the typical red flags when the battery life is coming to an end:

  • Slow cranking when starting the vehicle
  • Interior and exterior lights losing brightness
  • Needing numerous jump-starts in a short period of time
  • Battery warning light on the dashboard
  • Electrical issues
  • Corrosion on the battery
  • Bloated or swelling battery case

How To Remove Corrosion From a Car Battery?

One of the potential warning signs of a failing battery is corrosion — a white powdery substance that can form on the battery terminals when the hydrogen gas released by the battery acid reacts with the air around it. However, corrosion doesn’t always mean your battery is dying. The battery may still have a decent amount of life left, but you shouldn’t let the corrosion go unattended if you are not replacing the battery. If you aren’t sure how to remove corrosion from a car battery, it’s simple enough to accomplish at home in Las Vegas. You will just need to pick up a car battery cleaning solution to get the job done. You should adhere to the instructions on the cleaning solution you purchase, but the general instructions typically include:

  • Remove the black connector cable, followed by the red connector cable
  • Apply the cleaning solution to the corroded area
  • Wearing a face mask and rubber gloves, use a wire brush to gently scrub away the corrosion. It should clean up relatively quickly.
  • When the battery is dry, you can reattach the red cable first, then the black cable.
