For three years now, the month of April has been labeled National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. To show its commitment to the day and its purpose, luxury auto manufacturer Mercedes-Benz is doing its part to aid teen drivers in the U.S. and across the world to become more aware of the road. Teen drivers are much more likely to be involved in fatal crashes than adults are due to distracted driving according to the National Highway Safety Transportation Association (NHTSA).
Marc Hemsworth, Senior Driving Coach at Mercedes-Benz Driving Academy and former Chief Driving Instructor and Officer for the LAPD, explains why these statistics resonate with Mercedes-Benz, stating, "Distracted driving is a major problem for drivers. Teens are now faced with more distractions behind the wheel, compared to previous generations of new drivers. Reinforcing the dangers of distracted driving and being a good role model are a few ways parents can help improve driver safety for their teens and everyone on the road."1 Of course, parents could also send their teens to the Mercedes-Benz Driving Academy, a California state-certified driving school, which offered its services free-of-charge to teens during several events taking place in the month of April. The Driving Academy offers traditional driving school services as well, and there are several other branches across the world.
Usually, distracted driving involves focusing on current technologies instead of the wheel and road, but fiddling with the audio system, eating, and other activities also make drivers more likely to get into a crash due to distraction.
